CORNS
Corns and callus are due to friction (often from footwear) or rubbing on the skin, such as over bony areas under the ball of the foot and in the sides of toenails. As your skin experiences more pressure, you body attempts to protect itself by laying down a layer of hard skin. If this callus builds over a small area, the hard skin builds inwards resulting in painful corns. Corns can sometimes build so deeply that bruising and bleeding under the skin occurs. This is particularly dangerous in older, diabetic or immunosuppressed people who can be vulnerable to infection. Corns can often be easily and painlessly removed in one appointment.
Under no circumstances do we recommend medicated corn pads or corn removing solutions as they contain acid. Acid on the skin can increase the discomfort and damage the skin further. Please don’t try to treat or remove the corn yourself! This will only temporarily remove the corn tissue without the real cause of the problem being treated. We have seen infections which have resulted from home-based treatments.
The podiatrists at the Glenroy Foot Clinic will safely remove your corns and callus. This is generally a simple, pain free, and comfortable procedure which we can do in your appointment under sterile conditions. Your podiatrist will also assess the cause of the pressure, helping prevent the corns and callus from returning. Your corns and calluses need treating regularly. We recommend every four to six weeks depending on the severity of the corn. If they keep occurring, then further advice on footwear or insoles may be recommended. Don’t put up with the pain!
