ARTHRITIS

Sore joints? What are your options?

There are many kinds of arthritis, with the two main kinds being osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis:

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease resulting from wear and tear to joints. The characteristic loss of joint space is due to a breakdown of cartilage, the tissue that lines our joints.

Osteoarthritis usually occurs later in life or after trauma, with the weight-bearing joints more commonly affected.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis differs from osteoarthritis as it is characterised by inflammation of the synovial lining of the joint. Other tissues outside of the joint can be affected or become inflamed as well.

Joint tenderness and tired and aching muscles are typical. The smaller joints of the hands, wrists, elbows, knees and feet are usually affected.

Treatment of Arthritis in the Feet

Different forms of arthritis require different treatments. If you develop or recognise any of the above symptoms see your GP promptly so that the appropriate treatment can be arranged.

Medications may be prescribed by your GP. Modern medicine now has fewer side effects. These are now given earlier to reduce deformity. Ask your GP about arthritis medications.

By helping your joints to move better, we can increase the life of the joint and decrease the pain in the joint.

How? We design orthotics, raises, insoles or modify your footwear with the aim to optimise your feet function and support the joints.

X-rays and surgical opinions may also be indicated.

What can I do?

  • Maintain good muscle strength and flexibility via planned exercises. A physiotherapist will be able to help develop a suitable exercise plan.
  • Your podiatrist at Glenroy Foot Clinic can help you with a personalised program to improve lower limb strength and balance.
  • Physical aids or ‘joint saving devices’. Have your doctor refer you to see an Occupational Therapist.
  • Prescription orthoses are sometimes advised to support and stabilise feet.
